A Firm That Will Fight For Your Rights
For most of us, we act like we have no real control over these transactions. People don’t read their cell phone contracts, the text on the back of those receipts or even those long contracts for your dream home. We feel like we just have to agree to whatever “they” put in front of us.
But did you know that there are specific state and federal laws that you can use to get a fair deal? There are laws controlling many specific transactions from buying homes to credit card bills. We can’t list them all here, but we can help you identify which laws can help you fix an unfair or dishonest deal.
Credit Reporting Errors
But one out of every five Americans has an error on their credit report. That means that the banks, landlords or employers may be getting inaccurate information from the credit bureaus. Are you paying too much in interest? Did you have to get a co-signer or not get that apartment? Or did that dream job not hire you? If so, there may be something you can do about it, and we can help.
Abusive Collection Practices
Even if you think you actually owe the debt the collector is trying to get you to pay, you may not. More importantly, that debt collector may not have a legal right to ask you to pay. We routinely find clients who would have said they owe a debt, but it turns out that they do not. Don’t get tricked into handing over your money to someone who has no legal claim to it.
Keith helped with a major issue - even after others had said no. He proved time and time again that he had my best interest throughout the entire process.
Mr. Williston has earned my trust with his transparency and fearless attitude in dealing with credit issues. His expertise and knowledge and are priceless.
Some of Our Recent Cases
Fixing credit reports after being issued a 1099-C Cancellation of Debt.
We have been successful in helping consumers get their credit reports fixed to accurately report that they no longer owe a debt after the lender sent them an IRS form 1099-C. This is currently a major problem in credit reporting: a creditor (usually a credit card bank) writes off the balance on credit card, and sends the cardholder a 1099-C. This document reports that the cardholder no longer owes the debt, which may mean that they have to pay taxes on it. However, the bank keeps reporting it as a balance due, which makes the credit report worse.
We had to file a case, but we get the credit report fixed and put some money into our client’s pocket. All this without ever charging our client anything for the work we did.
The Dismissed Judgment
A client came in after the debt collector got a default judgment against her, but we took the case anyway. Once we got involved, the debt collector had to admit that they lied to our client to trick her into not showing up at court. Not only did we get the judgment dismissed (meaning it is gone and off her record) we got the debt collector to be the one to ask the court to take it away!
You can’t do much to get out of a judgment. . . most of the time. But we took the time to look at this case long enough to figure out that something could be done. That is our commitment to our clients.
The Case of the Lying Landlord
Our client came in after his landlord sued him. Turns out the landlord had been lying about everything: whether he had been paying rent, whether they still had a lease and whether the landlord intended the lease to be a lease to purchase.
We kept our client from being evicted and having an eviction on his record. And we negotiated to get him out of the property. (Who wants to keep renting from such a dishonest landlord anyway?)
